A couple of notes from today’s media day session at Penn State.
-Redshirt freshman guard Josh Marks is gone from the team officially. Head coach Joe Paterno said Marks never “showed up when he was supposed to,” but added that Marks is a good kid and just has to make some decisions with his life.
-Cornerback A.J. Wallace has a slight hamstring pull, is riding a bike but is expected to be OK according to Paterno citing team doctors.
-Paterno said Navarro Bowman, Knowledge Timmons and Andrew Quarless are all practicing with the team, Timmons and Bowman are officially back, but he is still waiting for grades on Quarless.
-Offensive lineman Nerraw McCormack should be back provided he can stay in top physical condition.
Position changes were confirmed by several players.
-Chaz Powell confirmed he has moved over to wide receiver, fullback Dan Lawlor said linebacker Andrew Dailey has moved over to offense and has worked out as a fullback/h-back role. Dailey is also listed as a running back on the roster handed out Friday. Mike Zordich is also listed as a fullback on the numerical roster handed out at the session.
-There is still no official word on a starting quarterback however most players hinted at the fact that Daryll Clark has an edge over Pat Devlin and is the front runner right now. Neither guy would really say. And Matt McGloin, the redshirt frosh Paterno talked about but wouldn’t mention specifically by name? Not sure what to make of that. Funny moment, Paul Cianciolo led the offense in a drill or two at the brief glimpse of practice the media got. Also a non-starting quarterback note, but Evan Lewis, the all-state QB from Gettysburg is now a defensive back, keep in mind, he’s listed at 5’10…just in case anyone wonders why the shift.
-Interestingly enough Paterno said that he feels if redshirt freshman running back Stephfon Green had to, he could be a 20-25 carry running back. Starter Evan Royster had previously said that he didn’t see a back carrying 20 times or more in the offensive scheme.
-Paterno said he still hasn’t seen the Outside the Lines piece, but did say he could have handled some questions differently in his 52 minute chat with the media today.
-Paterno said the dismissal of Phil Taylor and Chris Baker was NOT a response to the OTL piece.
-When asked if he felt Paterno would be gone after 2008, Clark said (paraphrashing) that usually when someone knows they are on the way out they start acting differently, but Joe isn’t acting any differently than he has in the time Clark has been on the team and Clark also said he doesn’t feel that Paterno will be gone after this season.
-Josh Hull is bigger than I thought in person and Brandon Ware is just flat out huge, A.J. Price is stick thin. Price by the way is wearing the No. 14. A couple of other interesting and “famous” numbers, Zordich is wearing 31, offensive guard Quinn Barham is sporting 67 and defensive end Jack Crawford has 81
