No comment from PSU on Bowman; Rosey fine for Lions

Navorro Bowman will reportedly head to a Centre County court for a hearing on his probation Tuesday.

Navorro Bowman

WJAC-TV in Johnstown is reporting tonight that Penn State linebacker Navarro Bowman informed probation officers that he has smoked marijuana “at least twice” since December and has not completed any of the required 100 hours of community service stemming from his guilty plea from an October 2007 fight.

Bowman’s lawyer Stacy Parks-Miller could not be reached for comment. Penn State spokesman Guido D’Elia offered no comment this evening as well. Team spokesman Jeff Nelson also could not be reached for comment.

The station said a hearing would be held later this week, it’s our understanding that the hearing will take place on Tuesday, but that has not been confirmed yet.

Bowman led the team with 106 tackles last season. More recently personal issues off the field have affected the linebacker. His father passed away last June and just before the Rose Bowl, Bowman lost his high school coach as well.

REPORT: Rose Bowl fines PSU for “closing” locker room

Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com reports today that the Rose Bowl has fined Penn State for “closing the locker room” after the 38-24 loss to USC back on Jan. 1.

The amount of the fine was not disclosed.

The Rose Bowl has a seperate agreement with the teams involved aside from the other Bowl Championship Series games but the game follows the rules set forth by the other BCS games.

But here’s something to bring up….as someone who covers the team, was there in Pasadena, what was wrong with the postgame access? If you want to get technical, sure, the locker room wasn’t open afterward.

But let’s see, off the top of my head, I recall Aaron Maybin, Navarro Bowman, Daryll Clark, Derrick Williams, Deon Butler, Jordan Norwood, A.Q. Shipley, Anthony Scirrotto, Lydell Sargeant, Maurice Evans and one or two other players being available after the game was over.  If anything, the fact that two members of the secondary were willing to and did talk to the media should be good enough considering the rough afternoon they suffered. Evan Royster and Stephfon Green were not around but that was because they left the game with injuries.

Not sure who else would have been needed to describe what transpired on the field. Seems like everyone who wanted to take responsibility for the loss was out and available to the media. But rules are rules, I suppose. A call to Rose media contact Gina Chappin was not returned.

With your knowledge of PSU and the way Joe Pa has treated issues similar to Bowman’s, what do you anticipate the punishment being? I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on this. Feel free to take a look at my postings on Iowa Football as well at: http://darkhorse27.wordpress.com/

He will not play in the spring game this coming Saturday, will be dumped down to second or third team for the preseason and then suspended for a game or two to start and be back in the lineup by the start of the conference sked.

That is just me talking, that is not official. But for what it’s worth, his teleconference with us beat writers has been cancelled for Wednesday.
